Black Forest Plumbing Dirty Air Vents

6 Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning

Air duct cleaning is an essential part of the regular maintenance of your home cooling system. Without regular cleaning, your ducts can accumulate dust, dirt and allergens that are then distributed throughout your home. You also run the risk of harmful mould or rodent infestations. To know when your air ducts need cleaning, watch for these six signs.

  1. Rising energy bills
If your energy consumption increases for no apparent reason, your HVAC system may be working harder than it should. The air can’t flow as efficiently when ductwork is dirty, placing strain on your air conditioning and heating systems. If you notice an inconsistent temperature or air quality in different rooms of your home, you may have build-up in certain areas.
  2. Increased health issues
Poor air quality can harm your respiratory system and aggravate even minor allergies. Because your HVAC system is pushing air into your home, it’ll also send any mould spores or bacteria lingering in your ducts into your household air. If your family members are getting sick more than usual, take quick action to clean your air ducts.
  3. Increased dust around the house
If you’re constantly fighting the accumulation of dust and dander in your home, chances are your HVAC system is working equally hard in the air ducts. When you turn on your air conditioner, watch the vents for puffs of dust, a sure sign your ducts need cleaning.
  4. Strange odours
Pay attention to any unpleasant smells. Mould in your HVAC system will cause your home to smell musty or mildewy. Unpleasant animal odours may be due to a rodent infestation in your air ducts.
  5. Dirty vent grilles
Check your vent grilles for build-up dust, dirt and mould. Remove the cover to inspect the interior of the ducts for accumulation of dust on the metal. Routine replacement of your HVAC system’s air filters will help limit dust build-up.
  6. Recent construction
Assume your ducts need cleaning after any renovation project unless you could keep all vents fully covered during the work. Particulate matter from construction activity is harmful to your lungs, so be sure to include post-construction air duct cleaning in your renovation plan.
