5 Advantages of Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless Water Heater

The biggest difference between tankless water heaters and hot water tanks is that tankless models heat water as it flows to your faucets. Conversely, hot water tanks keep water warm in a large reservoir until you need to use it. Although tankless water heaters are typically more expensive upfront than hot water tanks, you can benefit from the following five advantages:

  1. They’re energy-efficient. Tankless water heaters heat the water as it flows through the unit and out of your taps. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about keeping a huge tank of water warm while you’re away or sleeping. In fact, depending on your usage, a tankless water heater can save you up to 70 percent on your utility bills.

  2. They don’t run out of hot water. Hot water tanks have a finite amount of warm water — usually between 90 and 350 litres. If you use it all up, you must wait until your water heater produces more hot water. On the other hand, tankless water heaters provide hot water on demand using gas or electric coils, so you never run out. This is especially great for large families or people who frequently have guests.

  3. They take up very little space. Conventional hot water tanks take up a considerable amount of space. For example, the average hot water tank is about 1.5 metres tall and 60 centimetres wide. However, tankless models can easily be mounted on your wall, saving floor space in your basement or utility area.

  4. They have a long lifespan. Conventional hot water tanks have a lifespan of about 10 to 15 years. However, tankless water heaters can last 20 years or more with the right maintenance.

  5. They have a much lower risk of leaking. If your hot water tank malfunctions, it could spill litres of water onto your floor. However, tankless heaters don’t have that issue as they don’t store water.
