5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Furnace

You rely on your furnace to keep you warm throughout the coldest months of the year. Knowing the signs of a failing unit will ensure you promptly invest in a new one that won’t break down when you need it most. Here are five signs it’s time to get rid of your old furnace and upgrade to a new, more energy-efficient model.

  1. Your energy bills are mounting Furnaces lose efficiency as they age, needing to run longer to provide the same amount of heat. If you’ve noticed your energy usage suddenly skyrocketing, your furnace may be to blame. If you perceive inconsistent heat from room to room, your furnace may have lost efficiency. In both cases, investing in a new unit is advisable.

  2. Your furnace makes loud noises when in operation All furnaces make some noise when they run. However, if you notice that your system is running louder than normal or suddenly starts making popping, rattling, humming or clicking sounds, it’s probably time to replace it. These sounds often indicate cracks, leaks or other structural issues.

  3. Your indoor air quality is poor Do you notice more dust, dander or dirt building up within your home while your furnace is running? Over time, your furnace’s built-in features, like filtration, may no longer be up to par. A new unit with updated features will likely improve your indoor air quality.

  4. Your furnace is over 15 years old The average furnace works well for 15 to 20 years, depending on how well it’s maintained and how often it’s used. Check the installation label to find out the age of your furnace.

  5. Your furnace requires frequent repairs It’s normal for your furnace to require minor repairs over the years. However, it may be time for an upgrade if you’re calling for service every few months. Furnaces typically need the most repairs in the last two years of their usable life. If your repair costs add up to more than half the cost of putting in a new furnace, it’s time to replace it. If you’ve noticed any of the above signs, speak with a professional HVAC contractor to discuss your furnace replacement options.
